I mixed up a small test batch of Jessica's Chun Blue. Came out a really pretty, transparent blue on my first round of tests. However I'm having a *lot* of problems keeping the ingredients suspended. Seconds after I mix, all the solids drop out and if I let it sit for more than a minute I get panning at the bottom. The quickness of the solids dropping out makes it nearly impossible to get a good coating of glaze, either brushed or dipped. I'm sure spraying would be the same. The copper carbonate lodges on the bottom and is very resistant to stirring.
I tried adding about 2% Bentonite and am about to run some more test tiles but I don't have much hope - all the copper carb is still dropping out immediately after mixing.
My conclusion is that there is no way to use this recipe as-is.
My question is what else can I put in the glaze to make it a bit more friendly and if anyone knows what Jessica adds.
I am having the same problem with the chun blue. I took it to my local studio and they added bentonite and tested the specific gravity at 1.5. I used it on one bowl, brushed on 3 coats and it was a very thin coverage. It is impossible to mix as it is a hard lump at the bottom of the jar.
Thanks for your reply.... Glad it's not just me. John Britt has several Youtube videos about deflocculating glazes; first step is adding bentonite, second step is adding epsom salts.
But the more "stuff" you add, the farther away it gets from the original recipe. I'm going to add the epsom salts next - already added the bentonite and it's a bit better but still very difficult to apply evenly.
OTOH I might just give up on this - too much fiddling, not enough support. On glazy.org there are dozens of chun blue glazes with photos and comments.
I use this trick with the glazes that hard pan. I line the bucket 1st with a large thick garbage bag.Then I just move the bag around to brake up the glaze & start the mixing. Maybe this might help.
Did you ladies make this glaze from the recipe, or did you by the pre-mix from Clayscapes? I am in Australia, and made the recipe from chemicals. I have had no trouble.
I purchased mine as a dry mix. Will wait for spring to repurchase as a premix as it could freeze in transit now.
